How to Alter a Tank Top
Are you tired of your tank top not fitting quite right? Maybe it’s a bit too loose or too tight, or maybe the sleeves are too long. Don’t worry; altering a tank top is a simple and straightforward process that can be done at home with just a few basic supplies. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to alter a tank top to fit perfectly to your body.
Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– pins
– Thread and needle
– Fabric marker or chalk
Step 1: Measure Your Tank Top
Start by measuring your current tank top to determine where you need to make adjustments. Measure the length of the tank top from the shoulder seam to the hem, as well as the width across the bust and the sleeve length. Write down these measurements for reference.
Step 2: Decide on the Alterations
Based on your measurements, decide which alterations you need to make. If the tank top is too loose, you may need to take in the sides or the sleeves. If it’s too tight, you may need to let out the sides or the sleeves. If the sleeves are too long, you’ll need to shorten them.
Step 3: Mark the Fabric
Using your fabric marker or chalk, mark the areas where you need to make cuts or seams. If you’re taking in the sides, mark the new seam line about 1/2 inch in from the original seam. If you’re letting out the sides, mark the new seam line about 1/2 inch out from the original seam. For sleeve alterations, mark the new sleeve length on the fabric.
Step 4: Cut the Fabric
Using your scissors, carefully cut along the marked lines. Be sure to cut the fabric on the correct side, as cutting on the wrong side can cause the fabric to fray.
Step 5: Sew the New Seams
Thread your needle with the appropriate thread color and sew the new seams. For taking in the sides, sew a straight seam along the new seam line. For letting out the sides, sew a zigzag seam to create a stretchy finish. For sleeve alterations, sew the new sleeve length to the armhole.
Step 6: Hem the Tank Top
If you’ve shortened the sleeves, you may need to hem the tank top. Fold the hem up 1/4 inch, press it, and then fold it up another 1/4 inch. Pin the hem in place and sew it down using a straight stitch.
Step 7: Try on the Tank Top
Once you’ve made all the necessary alterations and sewn the new seams, try on the tank top to ensure it fits properly. Make any final adjustments as needed and enjoy your perfectly altered tank top!
By following these simple steps, you can easily alter a tank top to fit your body perfectly. With a bit of patience and practice, you’ll be able to make any adjustments you need, ensuring that your tank tops always look and feel great.
